Inaugurated in October 1996 concomitantly with the first Genoa International Boat Show, Marina di Porto Antico celebrates its 20th birthday. At that time, it represented a great challenge for all those who believed and invested in it.
“At that time, the marina was just a small pier with few essential services – remembers the President, Andrea Barbagelata – There were just some warehouses and abandoned areas beyond the parking lot of Genoa Aquarium”
Today, the marina, equipped with all services, extends over a large area which has become a reference point for both tourists and citizens.
Thanks to Galata Museum, Cembalo houses, the restoration of the municipal wet dock and the construction of new buildings and parking areas, since 1992, when Genoa hosted Expo, this area has experienced an important transformation. Areas formerly inaccessible and deeply deprived have been given back to citizens.
“One among the strengths of Marina di Porto Antico– says Andrea Barbagelata – is its location within a vibrant area rich of commercial, tourist and yachting services”.
At present, the marina has 265 mooring places for boats from 7 to 70 metres and two historic piers, called Ponte Morini and Ponte Calvi.
The marina was entirely built with works using reinforced concrete and it doesn’t have any floating piers. Its position inside the Harbour of Genoa makes it extremely safe.
Each quay is equipped with all the services typically required by international customers, which represent 30% of guests: electricity up to 250 A, water, illumination, waste collection, batteries and used oils collection, luggage transport through carriages or electric cars, bollards or mooring rings, Wi-Fi, video surveillance, VHF system and specific entrance rules.
In 2001, the marina was the first Italian Harbour to obtain ISO 14001 certification; its staff, which includes six linesmen, two secretaries and a 24h/24 guardians, provide yachtsmen with a high-quality service.
Marina Porto Antico S.p.A.is a society from Genoa which, in addition to the marina, also runs real estate business and tourist services.
The complex of the marina, designed by the architect Piero Gambacciani, is composed by three buildings, two parking spots, the marina and an open 10,000-square-metre area. During its construction, a lot of attention has drawn into the recovery of some historic works, such as the ancient docks, the base of a medieval tower and the building housing the Tide-Gauging Station.
Between 2005 and 2007 also the building next to the dry dock owned by Rimorchiatori Riuniti was restored by Antonio Sibilla, while Serra Gerace Palace was restored in 2010. Four years ago, Marina Porto Antico S.p.A. started the new adventure of the promotion and development of Castello Brown, an enchanting castle in Portofino which often hosts exclusive private events.
