At one of the winter boat shows, we climbed on board the Saffier SE 37 lounge, the ultimate model of the famous Dutch shipyard.
Daysaliers are not boats for everyone; indeed, they satisfy a small yet highly demanding group of boat owners and this shipyard has a very long tradition in the manufacture of this type of boats.
Just like the precious gem, the Saffier SE 37 Lounge conveys elegance in her modern lines and sophistication in all the materials and solutions used on board.
In full compliance with the typical spirit of daysailers, the boat is easy to handle for short-range daily trips and, inevitably, elevates the concept of Easy Sailing.
The deck plan is designed to enable the owner to control and steer the boat on his own. This is made possible by the particular position of rigging and the presence of two electric winches that, located ahead the two wheels, are consequently at helmsman’s reach. Thanks to specific button panels on the winches (one of each side) and many electrically-assisted settings, the helmsman can not only hoist sails autonomously but can also trim them without any help.
The particular position of wheel frames ( at amidships and near the deck house) is not only designed to provide the helmsman with greater protection but also to free the aft portion of the deck.
The aft section is therefore reinterpreted as a space totally dedicated to guests where the latter can be accommodated without being involved in maneuvers. Thanks to this arrangement, the aft sun pad becomes an element that only a few boats of this size are able to offer.
Comfort, elegance and ease of handling of the Saffier SE 37 Lounge are not certainly synonymous with low performance. The first elements that make us think that are sleek lines as well as carbon rig and modern sports equipment.
This is confirmed by the technical file: the ratio between the overall weight of 4,800 Kg (one half of which comes from the ballast) and the overall sail area (upwind: 68 m²; downwind: 158 m²) suggest, in fact, excellent performance and fun.
Though not required by the use which they are destined to, daysailers also offer a minimum of livable spaces below deck and the Saffier SE 37 Lounge is not exception.
What distinguishes the interiors of this boat from those of many other similar ones is their interpretation. They are not only perfect for a moment of relax of a quick bath stop but also offer a small luxury space where it is pleasant to take refuge.
In fact, going down the companionway (despite the low headroom), the length of the environment, the materials used and interior finishes are all an invitation to stay on board.
An excellent combination for this kind of boats that make exterior spaces their main strength. Moreover, a tv screen and a trendy coffee machine contribute to add more comfort; maybe unnecessary, these details, however, give an idea of what this boat wants to offer.
From what we saw, the Saffier SE 37 Lounge doesn’t try to find a compromise but perfectly interprets the spirit of a modern, funny and luxury daysailer to steered on his own.
Given her sporting nature, with an additional couple of winches to speed up maneuvers and trim the gennaker, the Saffier SE 37 Lounge might be an interesting option to have short races even with small crew.
