We learn with deep regret of Sarah Young’s death. She was a member of Ichor Coal‘s crew and she died at 11:27 UTC yesterday near the change line, at 39N and 160E, during the ninth stage of the regatta, from Qingdao to Seattle.
The skipper, Darren Ladd, reports that Sarah was reefing the mainsail with a 35/40-knot-wind when a wave hurled her violently against the handrail. A second violent wave pushed her tragically outboard.
The skipper tried immediately to rescue her but the hard weather conditions impeded to save her.
Only the AIS signal allowed, at 12:44 UTC, to recover Sarah’s corpse. The reasons of her death haven’t confirmed yet.
Sarah was a 40-year-old businesswoman from London who loved adventure. The Clipper Round the World Race was one of her dreams since forever. Sarah had been involved in trekking in Borneo, climbing in Nepal and she was a Divemaster.
