CMC ITALIAN LUXURY UPHOLSTERY is an Italian company specializing in nautical upholstery, where the finest interior and exterior cushions, biminis, covers, and blinds for yachts and superyachts are designed and crafted.
We met with Davide Costantini, Chief Production Officer of the company, who continues a long-standing family tradition that dates back over a hundred years. It all began in 1918 when Giovanni Nobile opened his workshop in Mortegliano, in the province of Udine, after leaving Palmanova, where he had worked as a saddler in the army.
Davide, what steps does CMC follow to achieve the highest possible quality?
During the very first meeting with the yacht owner, we present several proposals based on their initial requests to determine the most suitable fabric and craftsmanship, depending on the intended use. Once the selection is made, we begin acquiring 3D shapes using an electronic measuring tool, which allows us to obtain precise and error-free measurements. Back at our company, we input the collected data to start cutting the internal foam. We use open-cell foam specifically designed for outdoor use, ensuring that moisture does not get trapped inside, preventing mold and unpleasant odors. Once the internal padding is ready, we return to the yacht to check the fittings and anchoring of all the cushions.
How do you choose the right fabric?
We usually strive to advise our clients before starting the material processing, especially by understanding which colors and textures are most suitable. We often collaborate closely with the yacht’s designers. When it comes to refitting, we work with yacht owners to deliver a product that aligns with onboard requirements. Sometimes, for projects that involve special stitching techniques, we prepare sample cushions to present on the yacht. This step is very important, and our clients greatly appreciate this “tradition” of ours. It allows them to analyze and verify that the final product truly meets their expectations.
CMC ITALIAN LUXURY UPHOLSTERY uses a new and revolutionary fabric—can you tell us more about it?
We have recently launched a new product, Weftsun-Pro, which is now in high demand, especially for large yachts and superyachts, to cover exterior cushions and all furniture exposed to the elements. After extensive in-house testing, we developed a product with outstanding characteristics. As we all know, weather conditions are the biggest enemy of fabrics and cushions, which often need to be removed and stored to prevent rapid wear and tear. This is why we create custom-made covers using this highly resistant and lightweight material. Its unique weave provides protection from both the sun’s rays and moisture. Covers made with Weftsun-Pro allow cushions to remain in place for several days without concerns.
In addition to producing everything we have mentioned, CMC ITALIAN LUXURY UPHOLSTERY also offers a truly unique service. During the winter season, upon the client’s request, we remove the exterior cushions and bring them to our facility. There, we carefully remove the covers, allowing the foam to breathe, inspect everything to ensure it is in perfect condition, and, if necessary, carry out repairs. The cushions are then stored at CMC until the warm season arrives. Even though the company has invested heavily in CNC machinery, craftsmanship still plays a crucial role. Some processes are still carried out by hand, thanks to the vast experience CMC ITALIAN LUXURY UPHOLSTERY has gained over the years.
