Moby Dick Sail, sailing chartering as you’ve never seen before

Moby Dick Sail: a unique sailing charter service

I’ve known Giulia since she was a child. The daughter of dear friends with whom we’ve been sailing for nearly twenty years, she absorbed so much passion for sailing and the sea over time that she was inevitably caught up in it. She went on to have a brilliant international career as a sailor and eventually turned it into a profession.

These days, while sailing between the Bonifacio Straits and Corsica, I had the pleasure and fortune of meeting her, along with Raffaele, her husband and the captain of Moby Dick, the beautiful Sun Magic 44 with which this incredible couple offers sailing and sea experiences to the few and select guests fortunate enough to sail with them. I managed to spend a few days with them, between disembarking and embarking new guests, and after a couple of evenings spent in “gathered cockpits,” I decided to share how unique their charter experience is.

Moby Dick Sail: the sailing charter experience

You know those charters that cram boats full of people and then move them around like a herd from one beach to another? Giulia and Raffaele are the exact opposite. Starting with the Moby Dick, their boat, which is designed to pamper guests in a warm and welcoming environment. The teak that covers all the interiors tells a story of joy and sailing.

They accommodate only a few guests each week—at most six people—so they can be “cared for” with a crew-to-guest ratio that not only provides five-star service but also allows for understanding and fulfilling everyone’s needs.

Giulia is a refined cook, attentive to everyone’s needs, including vegetarians and vegans, so they can enjoy their week without any worries. The weekly menu is agreed upon in advance, and the crew gladly takes care of shopping beforehand to ensure the pantry is stocked upon the guests’ arrival. This service not only saves guests the hassle but also gives them an extra half day of vacation.

Raffaele is a deep connoisseur of the Mediterranean and an experienced captain. His qualifications and 25 years of experience as a skipper allow him to navigate guests safely to the most beautiful spots in our seas.

With him, it’s also possible to learn sailing or try Wingfoil, or simply indulge in his magnificent barbecues—a delectable option reserved for guests of Moby Dick Sail.

If you’re a fitness enthusiast, you can explore the most beautiful coves for your workouts with Giulia, who is an HIIT instructor. Alternatively, for a more relaxed yet equally thrilling experience, you can enjoy her evening guitar sessions—a moving moment, especially when experienced at sunset with a breathtaking view.

Moby Dick is also equipped with a full set of sails, including gennaker and spinnaker, allowing it to sail swiftly between the Mediterranean’s most beautiful islands and bays, far away from the annoying noise of the engine.

In short, it’s a decidedly different way to sail and, most importantly, to entertain guests on board. If you want to know more, it’s very simple—just give them a call, send an email, or drop a message on Raffaele and Giulia’s Instagram profile. Here are their contact details:

Moby Dick Sail: the backgrounds of Giulia and Raffaele

If you think the unique features of the Moby Dick Sail charter end here, you’re greatly mistaken. The most important factor when choosing to book a sailing vacation is the credentials of the crew who will be responsible for your experience on board.

Giulia

Giulia has been sailing since she was born, thanks to her parents’ passion. At 11, she started her career in dinghy sailing, quickly joining the competitive Équipe class team. Soon after, she was selected by the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) to join the national team, where she and her crew won the 2008 championship in Alassio. At 15, she began racing 420s, competing regularly with Elena (now at her third Olympics in the 470 class), achieving numerous victories including second place at the 2010 World Championships in Israel. The following year, due to an injury, Giulia was unfortunately forced to leave competitive sailing.

In 2017, she graduated in languages and linguistic mediation, then met Raffaele and immediately began working with him for Moby Dick Sail.

Raffaele

Raffaele, born in ’77, also started young with dinghies before moving on to windsurfing, kiteboarding, and, in recent years, Wingfoil. At 20, he began his experiences as a skipper, commanding various monohulls and catamarans, eventually taking charge of a magnificent 30-meter, 100-ton ketch. Along the way, he earned the highly coveted Yacht Master title and began dreaming of owning his own boat, which he purchased in 2005: the Moby Dick, the fantastic Sun Magic that has accompanied him for 19 years.

Luca D'Ambrosio

Editor-in-chief, boat tester and journalist. Luca began sailing at an early age with his father then as an adult discovered sailing regattas and offshore racing. He has been working in publishing for more than 30 years and continues to sail incessantly, especially aboard the editorial staff's boat, an old lady of the seas that he has completely rebuilt and which serves excellently as a "mobile laboratory" for The International Yachting Media.
