“I’m looking for a boat with a sexy body and a very competitive soul”. That’s is what Marcus Blackmore, an Australian sailor, asked to Southern Wind. A beautiful elegant fast competitive boat which represents every sailor’s dream.
The result is Ammonite, the third sample of SW 82 series, a 24-metre-long high-customized boat. And, to top it off, when it was delivered at Cape Town last week, the South-African horizon dyed with a wonderful sunset welcoming the arrival of sea lions.
Ammonite’s lines and appendixes have been designed by Farr Yacht Design and, for the first time on a Southern Wind boat, the lifting keel has appeared. It will allow to sail in the no deep waters of the Pacific. In order to make this boat more competitive, the shipbuilder has used high quality materials and technologies. The hull and the deck are made of a composite sandwich (carbon fibre, epoxy resin, e-glass and corecell) and the construction process used infusion. The mast is made of carbon while stays are made of Ec6, a system of cables made up of a stack of light and resistant carbon fibre beams.
Interiors follow the traditional Southern Wind’s layout: a crew zone and a kitchen on the poop; a shipowner’s cabin with a large private bathroom and a double VIP cabin on the bow. In the middle of the boat, a guest cabin.
Interiors have been designed by Nauta Design, who have decided to give a strong personality to the boat. They are practical but welcoming and cozy at the same time, thanks to the level of details, such as the colours of the whiten oak furniture with wengé and carbon fibre details, chocolate-coloured leather and tapestry made with an elegant blend of grey, brown and yellow. Moreover, frames have the same colour and finishing than the hull in order to create a sense of continuity.
The yacht is ready for its maiden voyage: 7,000 miles from Cape Town to Sardinia, where Ammonite will participate to the new edition of Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, in Porto Cervo, next June. A sort of test run before Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, which will take place in Porto Cervo next September.
Then, at the end of summer, Ammonite will leave to Caribbeans to participate to ARC and other prestigious regattas.
