Superocean 58 Sea Trial

Innovation is often an end in itself, with no relation to reality. But this is not the case of the Superocean 58: born from a specific customer request, she is the result of a long engineering, ergonomics and aesthetics study and astonishes with her quality and originality. The project, issued from a collaboration between two business realities – the Italian Seascan Marine, manufacturer of the well-known Scanner Luxury Ribs, and the French Yachting Maintenance – with design and naval architecture by Donato Montemitro and Benoit Marcilhacy was originally launched with the aim of creating uncompromised boats.
The exterior lines are characterized by a curved profile of the tube which, rising towards the bow while unveiling the hull, can be found on almost all the flagship Scanner models. This way, the observer can notice the hull windows and guess the nautical qualities offered by the hull geometry.
The huge deck spaces offer the guests multiple solutions to enjoy the boat: the sundecks, dining zones and aft bathing platforms (with built-in bathing ladder or hydraulically-operated gangway) are all designed to satisfy the needs of the huge number of passengers – 30 – the boat can accommodate. Furthermore, the shipyard gives the customer the possibility to choose the materials, finishes, options and layouts he prefers to best meet his tastes and needs. In fact, according to Scanner “there is no perfect boat. There is an ideal boat for every single person who wants to have one”.
This is absolutely true since the real luxury lies in distinguishing yourself with the use of unique custom items. The model we have tested on an autum day with flat sea is entirely covered with solid teak. The bow, without cushions, offers a huge surface with excellent view, interrupted only by the three wide entrances of the cabins below. The optical play of the teak edges and the square shape of the low side walls without side rails, creates a very pleasant and modern optical geometric effect.
The extreme bow section houses a special long compartment for the large bimini top which can thus completely disappear underneath the cushions. This system is aesthetically convenient, practical and safe at sea. Equally excellent is the anchor winch solution on the deck and the anchor winch below it (there is even a deck hand shower for chain and hand washing).
Maneuverability is guaranteed by the foot controls while two mooring cleats are positioned further back to facilitate mooring maneuvers. The anchor is specially designed by the shipyard itself, which has chosen a very particular shape. Another solution that makes the Superocean 58 even more comfortable and distinctive is the double bench/sofa on the bow deck, just next to the windscreen, the seat cushions and the backrest that offers a privileged zone for both navigation and relaxation/ reading moments.
A wide central walkway covered in teak allows passengers to reach the bow deck in total safety. Sheltered by a large hard top, the central section of the boat houses the steering console and a sea-facing guest sun lounger.
The console, a true superyacht-style helm station, is generous in both size and equipment. The latter is complete, well-arranged and easy to reach. Much space is available for the pilot who can thus find the best position to steer and manoeuver the boat, with six seats in total between the pilot and the co-pilot bench. Three steps lead to the main deck, where the cockpit is furnished as a real terrace overlooking the sea, equipped with a kitchen cabinet with barbecue, sink, refrigerators, wine cellar, pantry, cutlery and crockery drawer, all covered by opening teak panels: the outdoor spaces are at least 40% wider than competitors.
The owner has chosen a solution of extreme conviviality with two large-sized tables with fixed legs, surrounded by L-shaped sofas. The deck section accommodates a solarium: two large sunpads are, in fact, positioned above two very useful volumes, one for equipment storage, the other for a 2.20 meter (deflated) tender. A small yet aesthetically pleasant hard top covers the central part of the boat, which accommodates the helm station and the galley, but the shipyard offers the possibility to shade even the aft zone with a special bimini top supported by carbon poles that can be stowed in one of the many storage compartments available throughout the boat.
Although the Scanner Superocean 58 is clearly considered as an open yacht, we are faced with a significantly more multi-purpose boat. In fact, despite the day cruiser category which it could be inserted in, the boat offers the same amenities than a true perfect larger cruiser. Interiors, in fact, offer tree wide cabins and three heads, a dinette with galley and dining table and a crew cabin with separate entrance from the cockpit.
Interiors are light and bright, made of pleasant white painted wood with visible veins in a very marine style and with some parts of the walls and furniture in wengé: a pleasant and modern whole that enhances the young spirit of the boat. The windows are not very large but have an opening portion and are sufficient to give air and light to the rooms; on the other hand, it is necessary to consider that the Superocean 58 is a fast and very agile motorboat, consequently the certifications aimed to guarantee a high safety level limit the openings in the sides, but there are still two large hatches on the ceiling.
Positioned amidship, the dinette features an almost squared plan and is classically divided into a dining zone on the starboard side and a galley on the port side, with a large walkway in the middle that facilitates circulation on board. A squared electric table with a single fixed leg can lower and turn into two additional berths. The galley is compact, L-shaped and equipped with a nice dividing island. We find curious and smart the solution that incorporates a TV in the external wall of the kitchen island, facing the sofas and at the right distance, very discreet as a placement and not at all bulky.
A little forward, we find the door of the full-beam master cabin, equipped with a double bed in the middle, two cabinets with doors and two night tables on the sides. A remarkable attention to details and a selection of high-quality materials are perceivable everywhere.
The three heads, for example, share the same finishes: one of he walls is in ultra-thin natural split stone mounted on a light support which, combined with the rest of the white walls and the Corian sink, results into a definitely winning aesthetic effect. The plus of VIP double cabin is the bed which almost completely occupies the surface available, creating a cozy and comfortable space with a lateral panoramic window. The third guest cabin, instead, is bunk-bedded.
The hull is made of fiberglass with manual solid lamination, multi-axial pads, vinylester and exposy resins. Sides and deck, instead, use sandwich technology with PVC foam core. The hull design is the result of a long study on high speeds, high stresses and thruster propulsion: two support skids on each side guarantee good smoothness and softness features on the water. Construction has also made use of the latest numerical control laser cutting technologies. High-intensity painting ensures long life and perfect finish.
The quiet autumn day certainly did not help us to fully understand the qualities of a boat whose hull was specially designed to deliver excellent smoothness combined with thruster propulsion, good performance and high stability at sea.
Even at high speed, the boat performs agile turns, with a good lateral inclination. In tighest turns – we are talking of a diameter of around 50 meters – the engines lose revs but do not enter cavitation, to the benefit of performance.
The hull seems to be rather soft given the passage on the self-produced waves without particular hull strokes. It has an excellent self-righting capacity that makes the boat really stable even when stationary and its particular design makes the boat extremely dry in all sea conditions .
What is certain is that we are faced with a motorboat that, despite its considerable size and mass, has a sporty and fast behaviour, with a top speed of 37 knots. The steering console of the Superocean 58 is truly princely, with yacht-style proportions and an excellent 360-degree view, interrupted only by the struts of the hard top above. The wide walkways throughout the boat and the presence of numerous handrails guarantee total safety on board. And safety, together with aesthetics and technology, is an aspect to which the shipyard dedicates special attention.
In conclusion, the Superocean 58 combines classic charm and technological modernity: an ambitious goal that the Italian-French manufacturer has successful achieved.
