TETRAHEDRON, FROM STARS WARS TO THE SEA

Strange things are planned everyday, in an endless absurd competition . Only few ones become floating things with a minimal possibility to be bought.

Today, it is the turn of an English nautical architect, Jonathan Schwinge, who has published the first renderings of a revolutionary superyacht, called Tetrahedon. A cross between an Egyptian pyramid and a star cruiser coming from Star Wars saga. A strange mega yacht which should sail in a strange way: by raising from the water thanks to a sort of big foil.

The shape is that one of a tetrahedon, that is a four-faced solid. At high speed, thanks to a torpedo fixed on a vertical pillar, it should detach the hull from the water and sail like hydrofoils.

Its inventor assures it is not a simple design exercise because his superyacht is destined to astonish in navigation, and not only on paper.

The conceptual basis can be expressed in an acronym, HYSWAS (Hydrofoil Small Waterplane Area Ship), developed by many companies, such as Maritime Applied Physics Corporation in America and it is the evolution of the hydrofoils’ working principle.

According to Schwinge, the yacht, made of carbon fiber, will be 25 m wide and 21 m long and it will displace about 75 tons.

Speed, at hull immersed, will be 12 knots while “take-off” speed will be 15 knots and then 38 knots by gliding on the water.
